about

The other “cover” that appears on the album is “Blue Prairie,” written by Bob Nolan of The Sons of the Pioneers.  Although there are no prairies in the desert of Arizona, Tucson claims Nolan as their own, as he attending Junior High and High School in the town and would return with the band for nearly annual performances. Growing up in Tucson, Arthur attended the rodeo and rodeo parade every February and accompanying the festivities would be an almost non-stop rotation of the Marty Robbins’ album “Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs” and the Pioneers’ “Cool Water” on the family’s record player and car tape deck. “Cool Water,” released in 1959, includes a version of “Blue Prairie” that still gives Arthur goose bumps today. It is this version that Arthur’s arrangement is taken from and is a near exact reading of the haunting melody, voiced for his unique instrumentation of chromatic harmonica, violin, tenor saxophone, and bass clarinet (the latter taking the place of High Farr’s bass vocals.)
