“Devil’s Dictionary” is one of those songs that “wrote themselves,” according to Vint, who composed and arranged the song in one sitting. A slinky back beat lays the groundwork for a haunting melody played in octaves by Perry’s saxophone and Andrew Halchak’s bass clarinet. The song was tailor made for the lyrical slide guitar work of Tony Scherr, whose solo is an album highlight. The title of the song is of course a reference to the Civil War-era satirist Ambrose Bierce and his famous work by the same name.
